These forms are stationery documents formatted to look like the National Science Foundation's proposal submission forms. The forms are filled out on screen and printed out on plain paper. They are designed to work with Apple's Postscript Times and Helvetica fonts (not TrueType) and a Postscript printer. Changes to Word forms: - Cover Sheet: All the blanks default to Times 12, upper and lower case. - Current and Pending Support: Check boxes are smaller to more closely approximate the original form. - Cell row heights are locked down to prevent forms from overflowing the page when cell contents wrap to an extra line. - Added the Project Summary form. _ Added the Ship Request form. Changes to Excel budget forms: - Summary page array now correctly totals Line L [gulp!] if you don't encounter 'the bug'. If you do encounter the bug, the Troubleshooting section of the readme tells how to squash it. - Revised to work with Excel 3 or 4, instead of version 4 only. - Option added to automatically entitle each page "Summary" with "Year 1 of x" appearing to the right. (My department is required to entitle each page as "Year 1", "Year 2", etc., so I left the template that way.) - Added Beginning/Ending Project Date fields to upper right corner. - Senior Personnel List now has a fifth line. - Removed the word "Program" from the lower right corner. I think that Motorola starting making this chip as a possible lo-cost solution for Apple, but it relly took off when Radius bought it to make their Rocket 25i accelerator card. >This chip apparently (from what I've read from others here) cannot be >easily replaced with a full 68040 with the FPU in it. So the lack of an >FPU option for the Centris 610 is a bit more important than you may have >thought. This is the dreaded "heat sink" controversy/rumor that has been going on in comp.sys.mac.hardware since the C610 was released on Feb. 10th. It is not true. This has been verified by Dale Adams of Apple Centris & Quadra Hardware Design Team. The LC040 in the C610 is socketed to make replacing it with a full '040 possible. Since any '040 chip you put in the C610 will be running at 20Mhz (the speed of the system bus) it does not require a heat sink. Also there is code in the ROMs to allow the C610 to recognize a full '040 and use the FPU. -Hades ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1993 15:05:26 -0400 From: mrr1@cornell.edu (Michael Roman) Subject: 99 bottles Let's see...at, say 10 seconds/"verse", and a quadrillion "verses", I estimate that it would take about 300 million years to get through all those bottles ;-) Someone is truly an optimist. Holland) Subject: Abaton InterFAX Modem Upgrade Offer Everex Systems Inc. is the owner of Abaton's former InterFAX modem product. Previous articles in INFO-MAC described their upgrade offers. As you may know, the InterFAX 1.3 software has a few highly irratating bugs. These are never going to be fixed since the problems appear seated in the modem hardware itself. Everex (1-510-683-2800) recommends buying a chip set upgrade from them for the modem which costs $34.50 + tax and shipping. Then you also need to buy new software since the InterFAX software doesn't work after the chip upgrade. They recommend FAXstf from Telefocus 1-816-463-2021. This comes in standalone and network versions ($79-$120 + tax and shipping). After great difficulty and delay (a month), Everex shipped the chip set. The software >From Telefocus came instantly upon order. Everex sent an extra chip in the box which, if actually used, prevents the modem from operating at all. Once we took out the extra "diversionary" chip, it now appears to work normally. There was a little extra confusion since the instructions which they sent only applied to PC internal modems. Anyway, we did eventually figure it out after a few phone calls. They also sent some free modem software but it only works on PCs so that was not real helpful either. The FAXstf software we purchased is the network version. It seems to work quite nicely so far and looks to be a significant improvement over InterFAX 1.3. It does have one annoying quirk/bug that bothers me. When you go to send a FAX and need to select the parties to whom you want to send, the list only shows you only the "company" field and not the "person's name" field--hence it is a big problem if you happen to ever want to have more than one addressee per company. (The developer MUST have considered that possibility???). They recommend fixing the problem by putting the person's name into the "company" field and vice versa (clumsey to say the least but it works). There is also one other minor quirk--the nice little cover sheets are automatically generated and addressed with "name" followed by a comma followed by a dash followed by "company"--there must be something here I don't appreciate? When you call the technical help line, they will take suggestions but they aren't exactly helpful. Bottom line: If you own an Abaton InterFAX modem, I would now recommend you do the $34.50 chip upgrade and then get the $79 or higher (depending on your network needs) software replacement. I hasten to add that I offer no guarantees and that this is just a public service announcement which I hope will be of use to some of you. -Steve Holland ------------------------------ Date: 29 Apr 1993 08:51:48 +0100 (MET) From: HANS KROEGER Subject: A comment about posting answers to the digest. She says the Apple rep gave her a price list that beat the educational discount I get at the University of Washington (approx 35,000 students). If my understanding of 32-bit Color QuickDraw is correct, it takes whatever it is given, and optimizes it for the relevant color settings. Thus, since Deskpict stays in b&w, it must be giving QuickDraw b&w information in the first place. The "obvious" way would be to make the application or the folder that contains it invisible, but of course "invisibility" has been tightened up under System 7 so that you can no longer launch the app by double-clicking one of its visible documents. The next thing that might seem possible is to launch the app using a process manager utility like NoFinder. Unfortunately, NoFinder respects the Finder's invisibility bit in its standard file dialog box so you can never see the thing you want to launch. The same appears to be true of Process Watcher 2.0. Finally one might consider sending an AppleEvent to the application, which is probably what NoFinder would do assuming you could see the app in order to select it. But I don't know if invisible apps can hear AppleEvents sent to them by other means (not that I have other means, and don't tell me to go buy AppleScript :-) ). So, any suggestions? ----------------------------- I, too, had considered this problem; specifically, I wanted to be able to let a student run an app on my machine, using system 7 filesharing, without being able to copy it. An "obvious" solution, putting an alias in the shared volume and making the app itself invisible, will not work - system 7 is too clever. It is also too clever to be fooled if you put the app itself in a non-shared folder, with an alias in a shared folder. However, I came across a little utility called Tonto which, with a little work, will do the trick. Tonto, which is available at info-mac (/util/tonto.hqx), is just an application that will, once configured, launch another application, even if the other app is invisible. So you follow label directions, put a copy of Tonto in the same folder as your app, configure Tonto to launch the app, then make the app invisible, and now launching Tonto will launch the app. Not. Not from a remote machine using filesharing. The problem is that Tonto sets a path to the app referring to the top level, which when you configure it is, say, your HD, but when a remote user accesses it is the name of the shared volume. There is a simple way around this: 1. Make a folder to use for sharing (called, say, "Shared stuff"). Click the box "Make all enclosed folders like this one" in the Filesharing dialog. 2. Do not put your app into this folder yet. Keep your app in a separate folder (say "App Folder"). 3. Put a copy of Tonto into App Folder and configure it to launch the App. 4. Make the app invisible 5. Put the App Folder inside Shared Stuff. Now from your machine Tonto will _not_ launch the app, but from a remote machine using filesharing, it _will_. This only works for applications. I haven't yet worked out a way to copy-protect related documents. Tonto is PD and comes with source code, so I expect some enterprising hacker (not I) will be able to fix things so the path is set correctly without the rigamorole above. PS. Be careful that you follow directions and always work with a _copy_ of Tonto, not the original; otherwise you will find yourself, like me, downloading a new copy each time you want a new configuration! I have a strong preference that it involve the Mac and networking, but since the Mac is a "toy" and AppleTalk is "non-standard" ;-) I believe my faculty advisor has a strong preference that my plans include Suns and TCP/IP as they are "serious" and "standard". 'nuff said. I'd like to find a project involving both platforms and one of the two protocols (I know how to compromise). An additional restriction is that I'd like to work on something involving serial communication over dial-up lines. I know SLIP already exists and I have no desire to duplicate the efforts of others. I have considered implementing AppleTalk (or a subset) on the UNIX side, but wondered whether I might be getting myself in over my head (true? not true? ideas anyone?). Another idea was to implement an original protocol between the two that would enable Mac-like representation and manipulation of objects on the UNIX side (i.e. UNIX file systems would appear as disk icons on the Mac desktop, etc.). Anyone know if this has already been done? What I'd like from you is any input or suggestions you might have about the above-mentioned projects or other ideas you'd like to see someone implement. Word can mostly accomplish this through the outline mode: you'll have to apply an outline style to the entire document. Drag a paragraph to wherever you wish. If you re-define the heading 1..n styles, you can achieve a reasonable document formatting as well. The renumber command will number and nest-number paragraphs in a whole variety of formats. The drawback is that you have to manually renumber the paragraphs (apple-f15) to get them numbered in the correct order. THEN, I use the paragraph numbers on the paper to organize the paragraphs in my document. Lastly, I remove the marker numbers. --- end of quote --- Nisus could automate this task of numbering paragraphs, printing them on separate pages, and later removing the numbers. But what you describe is what an outliner does best. Have you tried More? It doesn't take up much real estate because you can (say) label each paragraph, see *just* the labels on the screen, and move them about by dragging. But, hey presto, you've also moved the associated paragraphs, so your task is done! No, I'm not gonna list each application and rant about its foibles; I'd rather make some generalizations-- * In light of the usual MS tendencies, I'm surprised to find that there are still Edit menus in MS programs, rather than Edit being a buried submenu inside of File, and that the Command-key equivalents are not set to Command-Shift-C for Cut, Command-Shift-P for Paste and Command-Shift-X for Xerox (which means copy). * Got a favorite shareware or freeware INIT or Cdev that does truly elegant things to your interface? What was the first thing you tried to test its compatibility with your programs? Anyone care to nominate another major software corporation less likely to make their protocols work according to industry standards? * Speaking of industry standards, the best way to set some of them is to be a gargantuan corporation capable of confidently launching some innovative software without having to worry that buyers will worry will not be supported in the future. Microsoft is responsible for an entire PLATFORM, remember? Good old MS-DOS. Not to mention a decent handful of programs that run on that environment (not to be confused with "a handful of decent programs", mind you...). OK: think of the last time you handed your PeeCee-using friend an MS-DOS formatted disk onto which you had confidently saved an untranslated Mac document with the assumption that she or he had MS programs that would translate the Mac program for them? * Speaking once again of industry standards, remember back to the early Mac days of mid-80's and how the operating manual was the thing that you finally pulled out of the shrink-wrap after weeks of using the simple user-friendly programs that were around at the time just so you could find out about some neat stuff that those programs would do in addition to the millions of immediately obvious things. Who broke ranks and introduced a certain piece of Mac software than, although powerful and crammed with an enormous array of functions, was clunky and non-transparent and user-hostile as all get-out? Remember the new and awkward feeling of "Huh?" the first time you chose "Styles"? * And then there is the Help menu. If these people worked in the Library of Congress, imagine what the Subject card catalog would look like over at Main Street Public! * But you can always call the nice friendly support staff at Microsoft, right? Buser Subject: System error 15 - again When you read through I-M digest 88, you'll notice my message about the cure uf the problem - giving more memory to the Finder. However, I think I was a bit too early in stating that it has been solved - the other day I had other errors, so I finally decided to trash the WHOLE system folder, backed up all other files on a removable disk and re-formatted the HD with Apple's HD SC setup. It was not too difficult to do, and everything worked fine until HD SC setup tried to mount the HD - it just would not mount. So I took the removable drive as startup device, and when I restarted, the finder asked if I'd like to initalize the Portable's HD, since it "is not a Macintosh disk". I confirmed, and then it appeared on the desktop - not with the nice icon it had before but looking like a standard external HD, but to me this is not at all important. I bought the Portable second-hand when the first powerbooks came out (and when a normal citizen like me could not afford one). I don't know what Formatter was used for the drive; but apparently not Apple's. The drive icon looked like a Mac Portable, and I know it was NOT pasted into the GetInfo-window. Then I reinstalled again System 7.0.1, and took the apps/docs back from the removable to the internal HD. Seemed to work fine yesterday night; I spent about 4 hours or so with it. Several restarts, putting HD to sleep manually (with the "Battery" DA) or letting sleep automatically and having it wake-up again: no error 15 or other error message so far. Only reinstalling the System software (over the old) did not help in my case; also "erase disk" from the finder and copying back again did not solve the problem. Only a real re-formatting helped. Did you experience the same, or am I the only victim here? And what could I have done wrong that screwed up the system or the drive in such a way? I'm glad it was obviously not a hardware error, because I really love the Portable, although it's a bit heavy to carry around. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1993 03:50:33 GMT From: Peter Adams Subject: The Trincoll Journal- A Macintosh Electronic Publication Announcing the Trincoll Journal The Trincoll Journal is a FREE weekly publication for Macintosh users.
